* TECHNE 06 International Istanbul Digital Performance Platform focuses on digital performative arts. Body-based artistic works exploring human interaction with new interfaces will be included in the programme.

** TECHNE Digital Performance Platform is an Istanbul based initiative that aims at exploring new potentials of expression and production in digital performance. It was founded in 2003 by an interdisciplinary group of artists and researchers specializing in dance, performance, design and digital technologies. With a firm conviction that art and technology are two inseparable entities, TECHNE founders decided to organize themselves in order to introduce digital performance to the contemporary Turkish art scene.

TECHNE seeks to create an international network of artists, researchers and engineers, and to cooperate with similar organizations in order to enliven the contemporary arts milieu in Turkey, a crucial locale with a firm foot in Europe but one that also extends to the “non-western” world. The main focus here is on collaboration and exchange with the other art locales, especially ones that are not regularly part of the global art circuits.

Since its inception, TECHNE has been a pioneer in the promotion of performative digital arts in Turkey. In this vein, it has made practical as well as theoretical contributions by staging performances, exhibiting interactive installations and organizing seminars inland and abroad. It equally involved itself in local and international art networks and initiated a dialogue amongst a wide array of actors in the fields of art and digital technologies. By doing so, it created a local awareness of digital performance in Turkey as well as drawing the attention of international arts community to Istanbul as a new creative scene.

*** Theme: Designing Perception
We are living in an age where mankind is capable of designing its evolution. The developments in the fields of robotics, biotechnology and informatics provided extensions for humans. The human perception is being altered by attaching, inserting and connecting technologies. The perception has become the object of design. We are thus, in a critical phase in the history of mankind, in terms of how to design the perception and how to evolve through the future. Scientists and artists are the protagonists in this process, mutually inspiring each other. The symbiosis of art and technology has regained an inevitable role within the imagination-realisation cycle in the human evolution process. With this impulse, TECHNE emphasizing the cultural diversity of viewpoints promotes works and researches in the integration of art and technology conceived around the theme of designing perception.

TECHNE 06; the first edition of International Istanbul Digital Performance Platform took place in 17-22 April 2006 in six venues with 6 workshops, 2 workshop presentations, an exhibition of 12 interactive installations, 2 live performances, 3 working groups, 3 seminars, 6 artist presentations and 2 project meetings, in Istanbul. 30 artists from 11 different countries participated to the platform. 23 artists are hosted in Istanbul.
